Dyfed Powys Police have arrested three males from Pembrokeshire after receiving reports that an Asian woman has been subjected to a volley of racial abuse on a daily basis for up to three months.
The three males, aged between 16 and 23 and students at Pembrokeshire College, are alleged to have verbally racially abused the woman while travelling on the Pembrokeshire College bus between Tenby and Haverfordwest.
Officers arrested two teenagers and one man as they got off the college bus in Haverfordwest on Tuesday morning at approximately 11.40 am. All three have been arrested on suspicion of inciting racial hatred under Section 5 of the Public Order Act and have been bailed to appear at Haverfordwest Police Station at a later date.
Superintendant Reg Bevan, of Dyfed Powys Police, Pembrokeshire Division, said: "This is a serious incident where the victim has been subjected to racial abuse over a prolonged period of time, which is totally unacceptable in a civilised society.
"These arrests send out a clear message that we will not tolerate race hate offences and will take firm action against anyone who racially abuses any member of our community regardless of their colour, cultural background or ethnicity.
"Our Neighbourhood Policing Teams have been working closely with Pembrokeshire College, who have given us their full support and co-operation, in tackling this incident.
"While this is a serious matter, it's believed to be an isolated case and not part of a wider problem. However, we will be proactively monitoring the situation and won't hesitate to make further arrests if necessary," he added.
Glyn Jones, principal of Pembrokeshire College, said: "The college has been fully co-operating with the police in this matter. The college is fully committed to equality and diversity and does not condone the behaviour of these three individuals."
