An estimated 10,000 cars were taken off Tenby's streets in the main holiday season, thanks to the huge success of the resort's 'park and ride' scheme.

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park's Policy committee heard on Wednesday that nearly 40,000 passengers were carried on the service, which operated between the Salterns car park and South Parade over the main school holiday period.

This was an increase of 8.5 per cent on the previous year. Up to 2,000 passengers a day were being carried at peak times.

A second 'park and ride' scheme, operated from Butts Field car park as part of the county council's experimental traffic management scheme in Tenby, was also well patronised, but did not affect the popularity of the Salterns service.

Sarah Middleton, of the Park's Development Plans section, reported that the St. David's 'park and ride' had also been well supported with more than 19,000 passengers carried between the Grove and Merrivale car parks.

The committee noted their thanks to the bus operators, Silcox, of Pembroke Dock, and Collins, of Roch, and also praised the county council for carrying out the experiment in August to close the Tenby walled town area to traffic between noon and 4 pm daily.
