Sir, In the early hours of Sunday, July 10, some person or persons unknown, climbed into the back garden of my mother's council bungalow, opposite the exit of the Sands in Saundersfoot, and smashed her clothesline and satellite dish. Mrs. Doris Allen who is elderly and lives on her own in Brooklands Close, is a well-known and popular member of the community. She is always cheerful and willing to help anybody, both friend and stranger alike. In her younger years when she was more able to get around, I spent many a happy hour helping her collect donations for various charities. Sometimes we would spend weeks walking all over Saundersfoot collecting from peoples doorstep. Nowadays however, she finds it difficult to walk, and to her, the television represents not only entertainment, but a link to the outside world and now this link has been smashed by a thoughtless act of vandalism. She has replaced the dish, but at a cost to her of £95, money which she can hardly afford, being a pensioner with no savings to speak of. The money however is not the real issue here, the main problem is that she no longer feels safe in her home after a lifetime of serving the very community that is now terrorising her. I realise this one act is not indicative of the community as a whole, but to the person/s who have carried out this thoughtless act, I would hope you would have, in the cold light of day, the guts and integrity to go round and apologise to my mum and pay for her damages, - she would, I'm sure forgive you- such is her nature ! I would however like to take this opportunity to thank all the friends and people who did rally round and offer Doris their help and support during this challenging time for her.
