BEGINNER'S luck took on a new meaning last Tuesday in Saundersfoot, when Cosheston School pupil, Thomas Baker, landed a 12lb 2oz bull huss, half-an-hour into his first ever fishing experience.
Thomas, who was with his step-dad Richard Snape and sister Lauren, was using a junior rod, and amazingly it did its job well to bring the 43.5 inch fish into shore, which is only four and-a-half inches shorter than Thomas himself.
The specimen size for a bull huss off the Welsh coast is listed at 6lb and 24 inches long, so Thomas doubled that with his first attempt.
A small crowd had gathered at the end of the harbour to watch Thomas and Richard bring the monster fish in, with one of the onlookers apparently saying: "Be careful, I think it's got teeth!"
This was a great start to Thomas's summer, especially as he missed most of last summer overcoming cancer. Now Thomas is fit and well, he is said to be looking forward to the summer, with perhaps a couple more fish before the season is out.
