The approach of Christmas is marked by many local events, and the popular Christmas Antiques Fair at the Carmarthen Showground has always been among the most popular destinations for unusual and original gifts.
This year, the fair takes place on Saturday and Sunday, November 29 and 30.
During these uncertain financial times, it would be easy to regard antiques and bygones as non-essential luxuries, but browsing around antiques fairs can offer some unusual and brilliant ways of making money go further. Not everything, by any means, carries a big price ticket!
The reality is that many items of furniture, in particular, now represent excellent value for money. Good quality 19th century mahogany and oak furniture have never been so affordable, so a new dining table and chairs could be a good buy for the Christmas festivities.
Equally, jewellery and precious metals have also traditionally proved popular investments during times of recession and the Carmarthen fair is renowned for its excellent choice at prices to suit all tastes and all pockets. And if the cost of a new party dress seems right off the radar, then take a look at some of the stylish vintage fashions, costume jewellery, bags and accessories to be found at the fair.
As for gifts, there is enough quality porcelain, pottery and glass to satisfy everyone's shopping list and so much more besides. Regular visitors know that they can buy with confidence from the knowledgeable, friendly dealers who they see at most of the fairs throughout the year. New visitors soon become regulars and dates for the 2009 fairs will be available at the event.
