Carmarthenshire County Council is celebrating the dedication and impact of volunteers at Theatrau Sir Gâr as part of Volunteers’ Week (June 2 to 8).
At Theatrau Sir Gâr, volunteers can get involved in a variety of roles. Through the Ambassadors programme, they work closely with the Theatre’s marketing team and management to promote events, support audiences, and help shape future programming.
Whether it’s greeting guests at performances, sharing upcoming shows with local groups, providing support at relaxed performances, or contributing ideas to creative projects, the work of volunteers is essential in keeping the theatre vibrant and welcoming.
Theatrau Sir Gâr’s volunteers also enjoy behind-the-scenes access, including season previews, building tours, and R&D sessions with visiting companies.
It’s not only a chance to connect with like-minded people, but also an opportunity to develop real skills in theatre and marketing, while earning Tempo Time Credits – which can be exchanged for experiences both locally and across the UK.
This year, volunteers have helped shape new guidelines and even contributed to the design of bright new volunteer uniforms. The Theatre’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion has also been deepened through an inspiring partnership with The Wallich, a charity supporting people who have experienced homelessness and addiction.
Initially part of The Story Project, the collaboration with The Wallich has had a life-changing effect. Participants who were once unsure if they'd be welcomed into theatre spaces now volunteer regularly, attend performances – some for the first time since childhood – and feel part of the theatre community.
One volunteer reflected on their journey: “I want to say thank you for the volunteering opportunities. It has really helped my confidence and independence. I feel like it is the first time anyone has believed and trusted me in 17 years.”
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Culture, Leisure and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans said: “It’s truly inspiring to see how volunteering can transform lives, build confidence, and open doors. At Theatrau Sir Gâr, volunteers play a vital role in shaping an inclusive, welcoming cultural space for everyone. Their work enriches our community, and I encourage anyone interested to step forward and discover how rewarding volunteering can be."
