Senior Labour politicians gathered in Pembrokeshire at the weekend to discuss the future of the county. Local AM Christine Gwyther invited Health Minister Brian Gibbons, Education Minsiter Jane Davidson and MEP Eluned Morgan to take part in a day-long conference to discuss the future of the Pembrokeshire economy and public services. They addressed all major issues covering Pembrokeshire - health, education and the economy. The conference, held in Solva, took the form of keynote speeches and workshops, where everyone present had the opportunity to have their say. Christine Gwyther said: "It is important that the needs of Pembrokeshire are heard at the very highest levels of government in Wales. Pembrokeshire has unique needs. Yes we want more, well-paid jobs, but we also care passionately about the environment and want to play our part in beating global warming and in living more sustainable lifestyles. "Labour is listening to people in Pembrokeshire and the fact that cabinet ministers felt they had to come along and take part in discussions on Pembrokeshire's future is proof of that. Labour is currently drawing up its manifesto for next year's election and I believe it is important for the concerns of Pembrokeshire to be expressed in the party's plan of action for what I hope will be a third Labour term in the Assembly. "Pembrokeshire's priorities were clear from this conference. We want our Assembly Government to continue investing in quality, well-paid jobs. We want our young people to be able to build a future for themselves in their home area if that is what they want. Pembrokeshire people want world-class public services. This means excellent results in school, teaching taking place in modern, state-of- the-art buildings. It means investment in a health service free for all, not Tory privatisation and cuts. "Labour has a vision for Pembrokeshire. No other party has thought about the future in such depth, considered the kind of Pembrokeshire we want for our children. The challenge now is to carry the momentum of this conference forward and translate it into more action in our schools, hospitals and local economy."
