A new car park is under construction at the Clicketts sports ground, thanks to a major injection of funds from SPARC through Tenby 2020. The Tenby and District Athletic Association, who run the sports ground, had been hoping to do the work with the aid of a grant from Sportlot, but unfortunately that was turned down, and so SPARC stepped in.

Over 1,500 square metres of gravel is being laid by contractors Sea-Land, Pembroke Ltd., and a tarmac surface is being laid across the entrance, and in front of the changing rooms completed last year.

Norman Hanlon, chairman of the Tenby and District Athletic Association, told the Observer: "We are delighted to be able to do this work, to an area that was badly pot-holed and was difficult to use in wet weather. This is the home of Tenby Football Club, who run 15 teams, and it is also used by Greenhill School and the Rugby Club. We will need to find some £2,000 ourselves for this work, but it couldn't have been done without the £6,000 grant from SPARC, and we are very grateful for that."

The association are now planning to refurbish the old changing rooms, and then will be fund-raising for a floodlit all-weather pitch.

On behalf of Tenby 2020, Mike Thorne said: "It was an important part of our Action Plan to improve facilities for sport, especially for young people. We had hoped to spend this money on a skateboard facility, but unfortunately that is taking a long time to achieve.

"We needed to spend this SPARC money by the end of the year, as it is part of the European Community's Objective 5b ERDF programme, which finishes this year. We were therefore very pleased to be able to direct the grant to this worthwhile community project."
