Over 300 passengers have been carried by Pembrokeshire Country Cars' wheelchair accessible car since it was introduced last autumn in South Pembrokeshire. The scheme has proved so popular that a second car has now been introduced and is based in the north of the county - but volunteer drivers are now urgently required. The cars provide transport for people who would otherwise be unable to make essential journeys such as getting to the shops, visiting the doctor, family and friends. The Pembrokeshire Country Car scheme was established in 1977 and is supported by a team of 80 volunteer organisers and drivers. Co-ordinated by the WRVS, it is funded by Pembrokeshire County Council. The introduction of wheelchair accessible cars has now made it possible to offer the Country Cars service to disabled passengers who need to travel in their wheelchair. Getting out and about is a significant factor in maintaining the independence and improving the quality of life of older, disabled and housebound people, particularly wheelchair users. Explained Hazel Cook, a regular user of the accessible Country Car service: "It has made my life so much easier. It is a very comfortable vehicle in which to travel, the drivers are very pleasant and are very aware of disability needs when travelling." The scheme relies on a team of dedicated and caring volunteers. This month, WRVS said thank you to Andy Ward, who has been the main accessible car driver since the first new car was introduced last autumn and is now taking a well-earned break from driving. As a result, the scheme is desperately seeking new volunteers to drive the accessible Country Car, particularly in the south of the county. It's an ideal volunteering opportunity for anyone who has a little time, and who likes to meet and help people. Volunteers need a full driving licence, but no other special skills - training will be provided in operating the vehicle and transporting wheelchair users.
