Is this the biggest item of Welsh pottery ever made? Very difficult to know, but auctioneers Peter Francis do know that it's the largest single item of Ewenny pottery ever to be sold in their rooms, and, to their knowledge, anywhere else in memory. Consigned by a vendor from Derbyshire, the three- foot high vase is unmarked, but has been authenticated as being 'Clay Pits' Ewenny pottery from the early 20th century. Bought many years ago from an antique shop in Wimbledon, the vendor remembers the purchase because the dealer was most put out that he wanted to buy his umbrella stand! In the bottom of the vase was a fragment of an exhibition catalogue which suggests that the vase was an exhibition piece from the Welsh Industries Association Exhibition in 1901. The auctioneers think this 'umbrella stand' should now comfortably sell for more than £1,000. This undoubtedly rare vase will form part of a large sale of Antiques and Fine Art on May 20, including the best section of period dressers offered this year, fine longcase clocks from Wales, London and Scotland, silver and jewellery, Welsh, English and Continental pottery and porcelain, including a pair of Staffordshire rabbits (£2/3,000) and a collection of Llanelly cockerel plates, painting and prints and many other lots forming a fine catalogue which is in course of preparation. An added highlight of the day is the presence of TV cameras for the 'Flog it' BBC programme.
