A unique exhibition of wooden objects has been opened at Scolton Manor Museum, near Haverfordwest.

The Treen exhibition features hundreds of items of everyday use, from farm and dairy tools to nautical equipment.

The collection has been loaned to Pembrokeshire County Council's museum by Karl Johansen, of Cardiff and St. David's, who has spent 40 years gathering treen items.

Mr. Johansen's interest in treen - an Old English term which literally means (made) 'of tree' - began as a child watching his sea captain grandfather carve the hull of a yacht from a block of pine.

He was inspired to start collecting when he realised that with the advent of plastics and cheap alternatives, the crafting of wooden objects was fast disappearing.

The Scolton display features items which have a practical decorative or historic value, with some domestic items made of sycamore, oak and ash or items of turned boxwood, principally crafted for medical or cosmetic use.

'A Triumph of Treen' was officially opened by the vice-chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Clr. John George, last week.

He thanked Mr Johansen for his help and co-operation in setting up the display, which runs until the end of October.

"There really is something of interest to everyone," he said.
