During half term, Toni Spiller, daughter of Nathan and Peta Spiller, of Upper Hill Park, Tenby, took part in the Welsh Schools Pistol Shooting Championships.
Toni represented Ysgol y Preseli in the intermediate age group.
After having only taken up the sport a few months ago, her parents saw the potential in Toni and entered her into the competition just to see how she would get on. The format is you get five shots per target, with the scores added up after each round. The top eight highest scorers then go through to a knockout stage to find who will represent the Welsh Schools at the final in Stoke Mandeville in January.
Toni got through to the top eight, so was in the knockout stages; this consists of two shots per target and the lowest score gets eliminated
As the afternoon went on, the intermediates were eliminated one by one, until only a few remained. The top three on the day go though to the final and Toni, to the joy of her parents, walked away with the third place bronze medal and the right to represent Welsh Schools at the final.
This is a great achievement as the persons in the top two places have been shooting at a high standard for many years and are already on the Welsh Shooting Team. Hotels are already being booked so a massive family contingent can go and cheer Toni on in the finals.
