On a clear bright evening, at a resplendent Heywood Lane, a thrilling end-to-end encounter, involving the class youth players from across the county, thoroughly entertained a sizeable crowd. Praise must go to the players who obviously benefited from close season training as they kept the pace of the game at a high level for its entire length, as well as referee Colin Phillips from Cardigan who allowed the game to flow. Leading 12-0 at half time with tries by Iain Rowell and Robbie Clark and a conversion by Steve Handicott, Tenby relaxed somewhat in the second half to allow the visitors back into the game as both sides frequently swapped players and brought new players on, ensuring that the entire two squads were fully utilised and seen by the respective team management. With another try, Robbie Clark completed the Tenby scoring in the second half, while the visitors rattled up 24 points. As a first competitive outing for both sides, the team management were well pleased with the game and various combinations that were well tested in what turned out to be a very competitive game. For Tenby, Robbie Clark, Rob Tuttle, Grant Rogers, Rhys Thomas and John Davies all caught the eye and what was particularly pleasing for team manager John Handicott, and his coaching team, was that the Under 16s who have progressed to the Youth team this season, all stood-up to the demands and pace of the game, which is a good omen for the forthcoming season. The entire team, players and management/ coaching staff, now eagerly look forward to the WRU Youth Cup preliminary round game away to Haverfordwest on Friday, August 25. Tenby squad: R.
