Tenby Youth played against Pembroke Quins in the first round of the Griffiths Cup competition last Wednesday.
The match played in sometimes blizzard conditions turned out to be an exciting contest between two evenly matched teams.
This competition is restricted to the younger players, and Leigh Hope and Gareth Merriman made an excellent contribution in their debut games.
Rhys Thomas, Marvin Thomas and Nick Drewett, other Under 16 players who have proven themselves in previous matches, all had excellent games. Also included in the squad were Steve Handicott and Dan Young.
The scoring was opened by a penalty by Aled Griffiths after 12 minutes. This was closely followed by a penalty to the Quins under the posts to even the score.
The tactic from the Quins in the swirling snow was to put the ball up in the air, putting Woody at full-back under a lot of pressure. The pressure paid off with a well taken try which they converted.
Just before half-time, Sam Smith broke away and scored an excellent try out wide. Aled hit the cross bar with the conversion attempt.
At half-time the score was 8 points to 10 to the Quins.
In the second half, Tenby ran the ball using John Sheasby and Mathew Davies in the centres to good effect, crashing holes in the defence, but the ball not quite going to hand on a number of occasions.
Alex Jenkins and Tom James, supported by Craig Magee provided excellent line-out ball and the open play by Sam Smith, Laurence Brits, Geoff Martin and Marvin Thomas was at its best.
It was a sniping run by Rhys Thomas that put Tenby ahead. Rhys showed a lot of determination and pace to score an excellent try. Aled did not have his kicking boots on and failed with the conversion.
John Sheasby scored a well deserved try next.
Tenby had a lot of ball and ran it at every opportunity with the backs and forwards working well together.
In the last minute of the game, Nick Davies ran in a try after a good movement, and Nick Pace did the rest.
Tenby are now through to the next round winning by 23 points to 10.
Tenby will play the winners of Crymych and Haverfordwest in the semi-final.
