Tenby Under 8s and 9s travelled to AJFC (Bridgend) recently to take part in a fun day tournament to help celebrate the opening of their new pitches and clubhouse. Both teams returned home unbeaten which emphasises the strength of Pembrokeshire football and in particular Tenby.
UNDER 8s
Unfortunately Afan Lido (Port Talbot) dropped out before the start, reducing this pool to four teams.
The Under 8s played Porthcawl in the first match and, although dominating throughout the game, didn't have their shooting boots on. However, after a long period of pressure, a lovely through ball from Elliot Scotcher found William Cowan in space and he made no mistake with a great finish.
In the second game, against Troedyrhiw (Merthyr), Tenby played out of their skins, scoring seven goals without reply. Alex Bayley got a well deserved hat-trick, James Oakley got two, Greg Palin got one and an own goal completed the scoring.
The last game, against Bryntirion, was between the two best sides and ended in a draw, which was probably the fairest result. Henry Whittaker, Jack Lear and Iwan Izzard excelled for Tenby. However, a special mention must go to Daniel 'The Cat' Storer who pulled off a fantastic match-winning save for Tenby.
UNDER 9s
Cynfig (Kenfig Hill) were Tenby Under 9s first opponents and after a shaky start finally won by two goals to nil thanks to strikes from Curtis Hurlow and Daniel Edwards.
Bryntirion 'A' was the next match and, although they won by two goals to nil, the score should have been a lot more. Phil Horsley, Cairan Broomhead and George Collins all went close, before Ashley Smith and Alex Heesom hit the target for Tenby.
Porthcawl proved to be the hardest team during the day and Tenby had to thank the heroics of their goalie, Jake Roberts, for keeping them in the game with some brilliant saves. Ashley Smith levelled the score after a run from halfway.
Bryntirion 'B' was a more difficult match than their 'A' side, but it was noticed afterwards that this was a combined team. Jake Roberts again excelled for Tenby and is going to be a very good goalie. Curtis Hurlow saved Tenby's unbeaten record with a long range shot.
In the last match, Tenby played Troedyrhiw (Merthyr), with both teams showing signs of fatigue. Greg Lees-Griffiths and Cairan Broomhead were again solid in defence, with Gareth Warlow and Curtis Hurlow netting the two goals.
Dene and Gavin would like to thank all the parents for their support and help with the transport.
