Tomorrow (Saturday) heralds Tenby's annual Winter Carnival. The celebrations begin with an arts and crafts market (10 am - 4 pm) at the De Valence and storytelling (2 - 3 pm), above Tenby Bookshop. Father Christmas will be arriving in Tudor Square at about 5 pm and will be distributing sweets to children, while Tenby Ladies Circle will be serving hot bacon rolls. The 12th Tenby Winter Carnival parade will take to the streets at 6 pm. The floats will assemble at Butts Field at 5.15 pm for judging at 5.30 pm, while the walking entries are asked to meet at the De Valence for judging at 5.30 pm. Categories for the carnival entries are: Floats - business, organisation/charity, private, and school. The Mayors Trophy will also be awarded for best overall float. Walking entries - under four years, five -10 years, 11 years plus, best couple under 14, best couple over 14, best group, and best decorated buggy. The route will see the colourful cavalcade wend its way from Butts Field straight up High Street to Tudor Square. It will then turn right into St. George's Street, then left into St. Mary's Street, left again onto The Paragon, and left up Cresswell Street, before turning right at the top and back in to Tudor Square. The organisers are asking that motorists please do not park along the route. The presentation of prizes will this year take place in the De Valence, where there will also be a Winter Carnival Family Night from 7 - 9 pm, with games, dances and prizes. Hosted by their resident entertainer, tickets for the evening are £5 for a family of four or £1.50 each. Fancy dress is optional. Indeed, Tenby will be in festive mood throughout the day, with a staff fancy dress competition and a best dressed Christmas window competition also being run in conjunction with the carnival events. A good luck message from the Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Trevor Hallett
It is a pleasure, as Mayor, to look forward to Tenby's 12th Winter Carnival and, on behalf of myself and my fellow councillors, I would like to extend a warm welcome to one and all to come along and join in the fun and festivities. I would also like, on behalf of everyone, my fellow councillors and myself, to extend our thanks and good wishes to the Tenby Chamber of Trade and Tourism for all their hard work in making the event such a winter highlight. Tenby is such a special place. I, along with my fellow councillors, am honoured to live in, and enjoy, such a beautiful environment. Tenby won Wales in Bloom this year and, with your efforts, we will again next year. I do hope you can join us at this truly festive occasion. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you all a warm and happy Christmas and a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.
Storytelling for children
As part of the Tenby Winter Carnival, this year's storytelling will be hosted by Tenby Bookshop, Tudor Square. The event will take place upstairs between 2 and 3 pm tomorrow (Saturday). Various local story-tellers will read Christmas, winter and other stories for children aged between 4-8 years. For information, please contact Carolyn Cox 01834 845180.
