Tenby's 10th Winter Carnival takes place tomorrow (Saturday). Crowds of people are expected to wrap-up warm and head to the resort for the cracking pre-Christmas event. As dusk falls, the town will be turned into a winter wonderland as the festive celebrations, organised by the Tenby Chamber of Trade and Tourism, get underway in earnest. But the fun begins earlier in the day with a fair organ outside Pipers chip shop and Joy's gift shop in St. George Street from midday. Later on in the afternoon, there will be story-telling at Tenby Bookshop between 2 and 4 pm, when well-known local people will be reading a selection of popular tales. Elsewhere, the KCF puppet show will be outside Barclays Bank in High Street, from 4 pm, while Steve Briers will be entertaining the crowds in Tudor Square from approximately 4.30 pm, prior to the arrival of Father Christmas at approximately 5.15 pm. Then as the clock ticks round to 6 pm, the cavalcade, led by the Swansea ATC Band, will move off from the Butts Field car park. It will travel via The Norton, White Lion Street, South Parade, St. Florence Parade, Lower Frog Street, St. George Street and into Tudor Square, where the winners in the various sections will be presented with their prizes. This year, there are new classes and the categories are: fancy dress - children up to four years, five to 10 years, 11 years upwards, best couple under 14, best couple over 14, best group, and best decorated buggy, while there will be float sections for charity/organisation, business, school/college, or private. Don't forget, first prize in the fancy dress is £15, while second place will receive £10. The float categories, meanwhile, carry a first prize of £50! Floats are asked to assemble at Butts Field at 5.15 pm, while the fancy dressed entrants are asked to meet at St. Johns Church Hall at the same time. The fancy dress competitors will be judged at St. Johns, before joining the parade at the junction of Warren Street and South Parade. Tenby Youth Club will also be participating in the procession and have been making lanterns with Chris Elliott from Manorbier. This year's procession will also have a grand firework display by Westcoast Fireworks, of Narberth, which will round off the evening. The fireworks will be set-off from the Harbour/North Beach. This week has also seen the judging of the shop window competition, while tomorrow (Saturday) also sees the shop staff fancy dress competition taking place. Entry forms for the carnival are still available from Rembrandts in Tudor Square. For further information, telephone Ann Rowell on 842345 or Elaine Rowe on 844175.
