The July meeting of the Tenby Visually Impaired People Group was held at the Avenue Centre on Tuesday, and the roll call revealed an excellent attendance of just over 20 members. Everyone was delighted to see Iris Roblin back following her recent stay in hospital, having made a good recovery.
The speaker for the afternoon was Eva Rich, who told members about her life as a visually impaired person, including education at the School for the Blind in Bridgend and the Royal Normal College in Shrewsbury, her five guide dogs and her employment with South Wales Electricity as a shorthand typist.
Iris Roblin also gave some information of her school days also at the School for the Blind in Bridgend, and how she had earned her living knitting socks. Both Eva and Iris had some sight as children, but have been totally blind for most of their lives. Iris, too, has had several guide dogs, her retired dog, Maggie, still being her constant companion.
Eva also told members about the various gadgets and technology now available which helps visually impaired people live independent lives, the guide dog providing mobility and independence in safety. Refreshments were served by the ladies of Tenby Inner Wheel, and this month's raffle winners were Margaret Walker, Daphne Stone and Victor Parsons. Chairman, John Webb, thanked Eva for an interesting afternoon, and Tom Forgaard advised everyone that the August meeting would be on the second Tuesday, the 12th.
The PBS minibus together with support from Saundersfoot Rotary Club then took members home after what all agreed had been a very interesting and informative afternoon.
If any visually impaired person in the area would like to join the group, please contact the secretary, Margaret Walker, on 843464.
