The new coaching and team management set-up at Tenby United have been active down at The Clicketts since early July, with 29 players already signed-in for the forthcoming season. New head coach, Neil Machin is introducing a running rugby style approach for 2005/6 and the structured training programme reflects this adventurous style, with plenty of ball in hand, slick ball transfer skills/support play and effective communication being the order of the day. Mixed in with these skills sessions, efficiently run by coaches Neil and Chris (Niffy) Brace, are a series of varied individual challenging fitness tests organised by Steve (Tabby) Jenkins, where players times are recorded and discussed and progress will be monitored on a regular basis. Last season's team manager, Mike Brace, has been joined by Keith Walker, and between them they are organising the myriad of tasks associated with pre- season training as well as mapping out the numerous support tasks required once the season gets underway. Each player will have the opportunity to discuss with the 'team' his aspirations for 2005/6 and the document produced as a result of this process will be used collectively to monitor progress in achieving the agreed goals and targets. The atmosphere on training evenings is a mixture of excitement and anticipation - mixed in with the sweat and slog - as players get to grips with the challenging style of play earmarked for the forthcoming season. With the September fixtures offering a mix of 'new opposition', focus is already keenly on the opening game away, against local rivals Laugharne who were promoted last season. That fixture is followed by a visit of Pembroke Dock Quins, always a challenging match. A trip to the far north of Wales is next, the destination being Anglesey and Llangefni, who were promoted from Division Four North last season. Originally the month was to be rounded off with the visit of near neighbours Newcastle Emlyn (relegated from Division Two last season) to Heywood Lane, but that fixture now needs to be re-arranged as the club has been drawn away to the winners of Mountain Ash (Division Two East) and Burry Port (Division Five West) in the Konica Minolta Welsh Cup. New and old players are invited to join in with the training sessions, held every Monday and Thursday, at 7 pm prompt, at The Clicketts.
