Tenby AFC Under 16s travelled to Manchester recently to take part in the Umbro International Cup and returned home as champions of Youth 'C' league 'D'.

It was a fitting end to a fantastic season and their junior football days with Tenby.

They had already won the 16s league and were runners-up in the Pembrokeshire Cup and West Wales Youth Cup.

In their five years as juniors, they had won the league three times, while being runners-up twice, and won the cup twice and runners-up three times.

The first day in Manchester was spent on a tour of Old Trafford, home of Manchester United, and although some of the party disliked the colour red, they all agreed it was a trip worth seeing.

The following day it was down to business and Tenby were in league 'D' with four other teams. Break 147 from Greater Manchester, Cheadle and Gatley from Cheadle Hulme, Wistaston Athletic from Staffordshire and United Eagles from Saudi Arabia.

First opposition were Break 147, who Tenby beat 5-1, with goals from Ashley Smith (2), Will Thomas (2) and Curtis Hurlow.

Next it was the Saudi Arabian side who were very vocal and very dramatic, but Tenby beat these 6-0, with Chris Millward (2), Will Thomas, Jordan Richards, Dan Edwards and Gareth Warlow getting the goals.

The following day, it rained continuously and the organisers had no alternative but to cancel the day's football. The day was spent at the Trafford Shopping Centre, a truly remarkable place.

Football resumed on the final day with Tenby taking on the very fancied Cheadle and Gatley, who had also won their first two games. C and G took the lead just after half-time and slightly against the run of play, but Tenby rallied in the last eight minutes to score three goals, by Ashley Andrews, Gareth Warlow and Declan Carroll, to lead the table.

Their final game against Wistaston Athletic saw Tenby take an early lead through Ashley Andrews, but the Staffordshire based side scored with minutes remaining to snatch a draw.

However, Tenby had done enough to win the league and lift the trophy.

Tenby Under 16s are grateful to Mike Roberts, Matthew Broadhurst, Peter Roberts and Dene Hurlow, who travelled with the team.
