Wednesday, October 23, saw Tenby U15s travel to their rivals Pembroke for a floodlight fixture. Having beaten Narberth U15s the previous Sunday, confidence within the team was high. However, previous to this, the team had never beaten Pembroke, having narrowly lost to them in the U14s cup last May.

The boys knew they had a fight on their hands when after 15 minutes Pembroke and county number eight Rob Jones picked up from a five-metre scrum and drove over the line for a converted try.

Tenby tried to hit back, but Pembroke were having a purple patch. Their left winger added to the score by cutting inside for a converted try five minutes before the break to make it 14-0 - was it a cast of here we go again? To Tenby's credit they finished the first half camped on the Pembroke line.

The team were motivated by the half-time talk from Ben Armstrong, Chris and John. Tenby came out, starting the second half, where they left off at half-time, and after five minutes number eight Grant Rogers returned the compliment when he picked up from a scrum and drove over the line. Captain Adam Ball added the conversion and Tenby were back in the game 14-7.

From the re-start Tenby were straight back at Pembroke, and following a driving maul, flanker Nick Drewitt took the ball and powered over the line to put the score at 14-12.

Tenby forwards were dominating the match, Arron Sutton, Jon Walker and Mathew Bowles forming a formidable front row. Robbie and Scott in the boilerhouse were putting big hits and driving into the Pembroke defence. The back row of Adam Ball, Nick Drewitt and Grant Rogers were immense.

Tenby's tails were now certainly up and from Pembroke's throw on their 10-metre line, Nick Drewitt took opposition ball and stormed 20 metres towards the Pembroke line, popping the ball up to Adam Ball, who drove and waved his way for an excellent try. Tenby were now in front for the first time, 17-14

Half-backs Andrew Lawrence and Steve Handicott ensured that Tenby kept up the pressure by supplying excellent ball for centre Ben Field-Thomas, Lloyd Wilson, Jon Lewis and Barrie John. A special mention must be given to Richard Williams, who in attack and defence was as usual superb.

The last try of the evening was a classic, and sealed the match. Number eight Grant Rogers picked up a loose ball, ran towards the corner and worked a superb scissors movement with Richard Williams, who used all his power and speed to slice through the Pembroke defence. Adam Ball added the final two points to make the score 24-14.

Mention also to Daniel Colley who was playing up a year and had a massive game at fullback.

Thanks to Pembroke for their hospitality. Thanks to parents and friends for their support and help with transport.
