Sir,
My wife and I first holidayed in Tenby in 1964, and have visited at least once every year since with our increasing family. This year there were 14 of us and we again met friends who have been there as regular visitors for many years.
On our first visit all those years ago, we remarked on the traffic congestion in the town centre, with cars even entering through the Five Arches, and expressed the hope that something could be done to keep the area within the walls free of cars and especially lorries making deliveries at most inappropriate times.
How delighted we were this year, therefore, to see that, at last, some decision had been made to alleviate the situation. How good it was, during the hours of traffic restriction, to be able to walk in safety and enjoy seeing people enjoying sitting at tables in what would otherwise have been dangerous places. We, therefore, applaud the courage of the decision makers and heartily support those residents who share our views.
One of your correspondents recently, opposing the new scheme, said that they would, in future, holiday in Cornwall. Let them try and drive through some Cornish resorts and they will soon want to return to Tenby, which is far more beautiful and friendly anyway.
For our part, we shall continue to enjoy our favourite holiday resort, which we now regard as our second home.
Who knows - someone may have even greater courage in the future and extend the traffic ban. 'Tenby twinned with chaos' some of the residents claim. Not so - 'Tenby twinned with charm'.
