Network Rail’s announcement that Tenby Railway Station will receive significant accessibility improvements, including step-free access to both platforms for the first time has been welcomed by a Pembrokeshire politician.
The upgrades, funded through the UK Department for Transport’s Access for All programme and supported by the Welsh Government, will see the construction of a brand-new fully accessible footbridge complete with lifts.
The work will begin with site preparations this month and is expected to be completed by Christmas 2026.
Senedd Member for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, Samuel Kurtz said: “This is fantastic news for Tenby and for rail users across West Wales. I’ve worked closely with the community to help make the case for much-needed improvements to this important station for my constituency.
“Step-free access has been needed for many years, and these upgrades will finally ensure that disabled passengers, parents with pushchairs, older people, and visitors with luggage can use the station safely and confidently.
“With all the Welsh Government changes that threaten the prosperity of our tourism sector, we need vital tourism destinations like Tenby to continue to thrive.
“At such a difficult time for the trade, improvements like this are essential to ensuring we are doing everything we can to make it easier for tourists to visit and support our local economy.”
Network Rail has confirmed that the station will remain open throughout the works, though some temporary changes will be required—including a reduction in parking spaces and limited overnight engineering activity.
The work is being delivered by Network Rail’s contractor AmcoGiffen, with the main construction phase running throughout 2026.
Network Rail is committed to keeping disruption to a minimum and will provide regular updates to the community through a bi-monthly newsletter.
