Tenby Town Council are considering purchasing a chain of office for the seaside town’s Deputy Mayoress.

At the Town Council’s most recent meeting, Cllr James Phillips told his fellow councillors that he wasn’t thinking a chain specifically but perhaps a brooch or similar to identify the Deputy Mayoress while on official engagements

“We have chains for the Mayoress and Mayor Consort, but perhaps we could have something non gender specific for the Deputy Mayor’ partner,” he remarked.

Cllr Laurence Blackhall commented that this year we have a very active Deputy Mayor and Mayoress who saw their roles as something more than just ceremonially

He felt the Deputy Mayoress should be officially recognised but was aware of the optics around too much expenditure on ceremonial regalia and felt this needed to be handled diplomatically.

He noted that the Mayor’s Consort chain had been sponsored by a local businessman in memory of their son. Perhaps sponsorship could again be forthcoming or perhaps a competition could be held for the design.

It was resolved that the Town Council investigate various forms of identification for the Deputy Mayoress, including potential costings, and report back.

Tenby’s ‘Mayor Making’ held back in May, saw Cllr Dai Morgan make it a hat-trick in the role.

Cllr Morgan fills the role for the third successive year, although this time, with a new Deputy Mayor by his side, with Cllr Tom Sloan [taking over from Cllr Charles Dale] installed in the position for the seaside town.

Mayor, Cllr Morgan’s partner Melanie Lewis was installed as his Mayoress once again; while Cllr Sloan’s wife Daniella was appointed as Deputy Mayoress.

The roles of Sergeant at Arms [Spike Abbott]; Sergeant at Mace [Denise Cousins]; and Town Crier [Erin Morgan] were also confirmed at the ceremony; whilst Rev Steven Brett was appointed as Mayor’s Chaplain
