With no election having been requested to fill two casual vacancies for the seaside town, one on South Ward and one on North Ward - Tenby Town Council will now move to fill the roles via co-option.
Tenby Town Council recently gave notice that two councillors have ceased to be members, through persistent non-attendance at meetings.
Section 85 of the Local Government Act 1972 provides that if a councillor fails throughout a period of six consecutive months to attend any meeting of the authority, or of a committee, sub-committee, joint committee or joint board, they shall, unless the failure was due to a reason approved by the authority before the expiry of that period, cease to be a member of the authority.
As the councillors concerned, Joe Criddle and Laura Crockford, did not attend any qualifying meetings during the statutory period, and no prior approval for absence was granted, their seats became vacant.
Tenby Town Council shared: “Being a councillor gives you a chance to make such a huge difference to quality of life for people in your area.
“You do not have to be a member of a political party and will be able to engage with the local community and keep up-to-date with issues of concern; provide a voice for your local community and mediate between, or campaign for, individuals, the council and organisations while also managing public funds to ensure the community gets best value for the services provided.”
Anyone interested in being considered for co-option is asked to write to the council outlining their reasons for seeking co-option and what qualities they feel they may bring to the role of town councillor.
Letters should be sent by post to the De Valence Pavilion, Upper Frog Street, Tenby SA70 7JD or via email to: [email protected] by Friday, November 7.
