On Sunday, July 8, Tenby played Newport Pembs. in the fourth match of the season in the Dyfed League.

Newport had their tails up following wins against Milford Haven both home and away, and Tenby expected a fiercely competitive fixture.

Tenby's top pairing of Anthony Hall and Steve Amos felt the heat, and went down on the 17th by a margin of 2 and 1.

The second pair of Brian Cramb and Phil Rees fought all the way to the 18th green where honours were even with the match halved.

After the spirited resistance from their top two pairs, the remaining seven Newport pairs all lost to their Tenby opponents, due mainly to the strength of the home team. The highest handicap in the Tenby side was nine, while Newport fielded a number of double figure players who were unable to cope with the difficulty of the Tenby course while receiving a maximum of four shots.

The seven winning pairs were John Morris and Simon Rossiter 2 and 1; John Gotwaltz and Colin Murphy 5 and 3; Alan Jones and Dean Kennett 5 and 4; Jamie Preston and Nick Rogers 2 and 1; Martin Morris and Kenny Breaker 2 and 1; Matt Brown and Martin Creese 6 and 5; and Loz Phillips and Richard Chapman 7 and 6.

After four fixtures played, Tenby has a creditable 28.5 points, and are well positioned to have a run at the title which has eluded them since 1986.
