Both of this month’s Remembered Faces bring back memories of my time spent working at the Head Post Office premises at Tudor Square.

Brother Thomas was a familiar figure who conveyed mail by boat between Caldey Island and the sorting office.

Geoff was a member of staff responsible for the maintenance of mail delivery vans situated at Roberts Yard in Deer Park, and which were later transferred to premises at the Green, where the new Co-op store is situated.

Thomas Richmond Moore

died July 1966, aged 57.

Known to local people as BROTHER THOMAS, he was the Steward to the Community of Cistercian Monks on Caldey Island and well known to residents and holiday makers.

He played a major role in the Community’s negotiations with the Borough Council on such matters as landing fees for goods and passengers using harbour facilities. He was responsible for ensuring that the island’s products were marketed to best advantage and was a link between the Monastery and the outside world. Brother Thomas was a capable seaman and served on the local lifeboat committee.

A native of Staffordshire, Brother Thomas joined the Order when he was 20 years old and after spending a holiday in this area.

After his death the “Brother Thomas Garden of Remembrance” was opened in his memory.
