Tenby's historical interest, combined with a plethora of places of beauty, can prove a major draw in attracting package tours from cruise ship operators, believe local councillors. The matter was discussed at Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, when Clrs. Mrs. Caroline Thomas and Mrs. Sue Lane reported back to fellow members on a workshop they had attended in Narberth's Plas Hyfryd Hotel earlier in the day. The aim of the workshop was to learn what other holiday destinations were doing to attract cruise ship operators into their resorts. "With 60 per cent of cruise ship operators already purchasing tours in the area, that leaves a massive 40 per cent still undecided, so we still really have a lot to aim at over the next year," said Clr. Mrs. Lane. "We don't want the visitors for an hour, we want them for a day, and we've got a huge amount of activities and sites within the town that I believe will entice them, so it's just a question of coming up with ideas and putting a package together," she added. Clr. Mrs. Thomas suggested that the first step to set the ball rolling would be to provide the Milford Haven Port Authority with Tenby literature to pass on to the ground handlers. The production of a leaflet with editorial and photos highlighting features of the town was also proposed, with Clr. Mike Evans suggesting that funding from PLANED for such an idea could be looked into. "Such a leaflet could also be aimed at promoting tourism in our town to other packages and not just cruise ship operators," he remarked.
