Tenby’s floral credentials has come up smelling of roses once again, as the resort took its 31st Wales in Bloom title last week, at a results ceremony held in Prestatyn.
The town took top place in the ‘coastal resort up to 12,000’ category, with a silver gilt.
Wales in Bloom is the regional element of the National Britain in Bloom Competition supported by the Royal Horticultural Society.
This year Visit Wales proclaimed our land as a land for adventure and Wales in Bloom judges certainly had a bloomingly beautiful adventure judging this year’s competition.
The results of this year’s competition were announced at the awards ceremony at the Nova Centre in Prestatyn.
Seaside towns along the north Wales coast have a long and proud record of supporting Wales in Bloom so it was fitting that they hosted this years’ ceremony.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of Tenby town council, the town clerk Andrew Davies told members that the chairman of Tenby in Bloom Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane had attended the awards.
“We came first again but did miss out on the gold. We’ll take away the judges report to digest and see what can be done to grab the gold,” he said.
There was more good news for Tenby with The Giltar Hotel taking a gold and coming first in the ‘Hotels, Guest Houses, Public Houses and Restaurants –Frontage only’ category.
Malcolm Brace, owner of the Giltar Hotel said: “I would like to say that we are delighted once again to be winners of the gold award for the best Hotel frontage in Wales.
“It’s a great honour to receive such an award. Our thanks must go to the hard work put in by our gardener Simon Rowlands who works tirelessly to achieve what we have.”
Saundersfoot in Bloom grabbed a ‘silver gilt’ when they came third in the ‘Large Village’ section, whilst other local recognition went to Lydstep Beach Holiday Park (Silver Gilt) and Kiln Park Holiday Park (Silver) in the ‘Caravans Static or Touring, Camping and Holiday Home Sites – Over 100 Units’ category; and Amroth Bay Holiday which took third place and silver in the ‘Under 100 Units’ of the same section.
The Chairman of Wales in Bloom, Jim Goodwin thanked everyone for entering Wales in Bloom and attending the awards ceremony adding: “Our message is reaching the furthest corners in Wales. I would especially single out our Britain in Bloom nominations this year.
“They were Colwyn Bay, Mathern, Mounton and Pwllmeyric, Tenby and Goldegarth (Part of Llandudno in the Urban Category).
“Well done to you all in reaching the final 72 which is no mean feat considering the fierce competition between entries.
“I have spoken to the national judges who visited Wales this year, and all thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality and Welsh welcome. We are all looking forward to the results that will be announced in Birmingham in October.
“2017 will be the 50th anniversary of Wales in Bloom so we are hoping for a bumper crop of entries, some wonderful displays and a great celebration at our ceremony in Pembrey and Burry Port,” he added.
