SI Tenby’s FGM coordinator Wendy Bell, accompanied by president Iris Davies and several fellow Soroptimists, set-up a display in the Regency Hall in Saundersfoot in order to showcase Orange and White Ribbon Day recently.
Orange Ribbon Day, held on November 27, is the United Nations International Day for the elimination of violence against women. The campaign aims to raise public awareness and mobilise people everywhere to bring about change.
White Ribbon Day, taking place two days after Orange Ribbon Day, also aims in to help prevent domestic violence. This is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in the world today. According to White Ribbon Day UK, women between the ages of 15 and 44 are more at risk from rape and domestic violence than from cancer, motor accidents, war and malaria. The day is specifically about ending violence against women, not only by wearing the ribbon but also by getting men to swear an oath never to commit, excuse or be silent about women being hurt.
President Iris, Wendy and their colleagues were able to engage with a wide cross section of visitors to the Regency Hall in order raise awareness of the extent violence against women and girls both nationally and globally.
SI Tenby would like to thank all those who purchased ribbons in order to show their support for the two campaigns.
The proceeds from the sale will be given to a domestic abuse charity.
