Tenby United Seconds entertained Haverfordwest Seconds at Heywood Lane on Saturday in a very good game of free-flowing rugby.

Haverfordwest started the stronger, but it was only a matter of time before the Tenby pack got on top. The home scrum started to dominate, with the front row of Dai Balkwell, Paul Bevan and hooker Mark Brace destroying the opposition.

Haverfordwest, to their credit, are a never-say-die team and it was they who drew first blood. Tenby were camped on their 25-yard line when a dropped passed was fly-hacked through by their outside-half and their nippy winger just beat Richard Rossiter to the touch down. The try was converted to make it 7-0 to Haverfordwest.

This spurred Tenby into action and from a set of lineouts, from which Chris 'Niffy' Brace and Paul Broaders won good ball, the Seasiders forced their way into Haverfordwest's half. Tenby won a scrum five metres from the line and the pack drove over for Chris Williams, who was playing at scrum-half, to pick up and touch down. Jonathon Webb was just wide with the conversion attempt.

Again Haverfordwest came back straight from the kick-off and were awarded a penalty, which was slotted over with ease, making it 10-7 to them.

Tenby kicked off and from good chasing work by Chris Brace, Jason Cole and captain Michael 'Penfold' Lewis, they pinned down the visiting forwards, allowing Jon Webb to release Dean Rees - who had an excellent game - and his pace and side-stepping enabled him to beat five men and touch down under the posts. Webb stepped up and slotted the conversion to make it 12-10 to Tenby at half-time.

The second half was all Tenby, with Ben Diment, Gareth Thomas, Delwyn Brace and Russ Milns having very good games, with good tackling and hard running.

Tenby now dominated the set-pieces, and a further push-over try was scored by Chris Williams, who poached the touchdown for himself following the forwards' hard efforts.

In addition, Paul Broaders rounded off the game with a final try from a fine pick up and drive, leaving Tenby winners by 24 points to 10.

Tenby had to field no fewer than 12 forwards in this game because of a recent spate of injuries to their backline section, but players like Ben Diment, Richard Rossiter, Jason Cole and Lou Brace showed just how versatile they can be, with Rossiter demonstrating kicking skills that most first team backline players would be proud of.

Coach Nicky Rees and captain Michael Lewis would like to thank all the substitutes for their support, and all the second team boys for all the effort that they are putting in, not only on the playing field, but also in training. But they also stressed that this must be maintained if the Seconds want to pick up any silverware this season.

Also, the team would like to congratulate Nicky Allen and his wife Gwen on the birth of their baby daughter and wish them all well.

In addition, they would like to wish Dean Rees a speedy recovery after breaking his leg during the match on Saturday,

Chris Brace stated that Dean would be a massive loss to Tenby Utd; he was playing so well for the club.
