A pleasant Sunday morning with a force three south-westerly and sunshine brought eight boats to the line for the latest race in the clubs winter series. Three Ospreys, an RS600, an RS Vareo, two Toppers and the club Laser enjoyed the race run by Paul Evenden, assisted by Blake Shaw.
At the reaching start, Jon Morris in his RS600 was quickly away, followed by the Ospreys, spinnakers drawing, and the rest of the fleet. Using a smaller than normal course to assist the slower boats, boat handling was at a premium.
The Osprey battle was decided when Mike Stace and Deanna Morton and Alistairs Mackay and Knibb both capsized at the windward mark, leaving Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait to sail away to the win. Jon Morris in the RS600 would have split the Ospreys had he not suffered a couple of capsizes, leaving him a few seconds behind the Alistairs.
In the Topper fleet, a close battle between brothers Matt and James May was won by Matt using his greater experience to good effect. On handicap Matt beat Jonathan by just one second to take fourth.
The remaining two boats, Danny in the Vareo sailed a gentlemanly race without troubling his spinnaker to take seventh and new club member Jamie Bohata in the Laser enjoyed his first race, doing well to stay upright, especially when several more experienced sailors didn't!
Junior Sailing
The junior Christmas party will be held on Wednesday, December 14.
Darts
Wait for it. Yes we won! Against a depleted but very spirited opposition, we found some form. Ray Clayton repeated his feat of two weeks ago when he overcame a huge deficit to sneak a win. Marc Shepherd was on form, as was captain erratic, Terry Evans, with vice-captain, Colin Parmenter, nailing the win.
We are away this evening to the Castle Inn, Manorbier. Participating members please note.
Social Programme
As mentioned previously, a social programme for the next few months is complete and is published in the latest newsletter which has been circulated - copies are also available at the club. Please support the club's efforts on the social front.
Just a few dates to note - Tenby Blues Festival, when we will be hosting Cottonmouth on Saturday, November 12, while the club Christmas party will be held on Friday, December 23.
Jam Evening
Last Wednesday's electric jam was a well attended and thoroughly entertaining session. Many thanks to Terry Evans and Nic Thomas for co-ordinating the evening.
The next acoustic jam will be on Monday, November 28. It's the place to be - don't miss it.
Howard
Howard will be catering this weekend. Come on down and enjoy fine food in warm and convivial surroundings. His steak pie is amazing!
Dinner Dance
and AGM
Would members please note that the annual dinner-dance and prize-giving will take place on Friday, November 18, at the Giltar Hotel.
This will be followed by the club annual general meeting, at the club, on Saturday, November 19.
The menu for the dinner is now available and is in the newsletter and on the club's website. Please contact the commodore, Terry Evans, as soon as possible, to make a reservation and give him your choice of menu.
Maritime Humour
A gust of wind blew a woman's hat into the water while sailing on a tall ship. A body hurled over the rail and saved the hat. Coming back on board, the man was cheered by the other passengers. The captain asked the man, "Brilliant job, mate. Is there anything I can do for you?" The man replied, "You can tell me who pushed me!"
Opening Hours
We have returned to winter openings of Friday, Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtime. Why not call in for a 'lemonade' - there are not many 'watering holes' with a vista like ours.
Website
Information on club activities etc can be found on the club's website. This is a very friendly and welcoming club which endeavours to involve all members in a variety of activities.
