Tuesday Racing

Tuesday's race took place just after the large late afternoon thunderstorm passed over Tenby. Winds were light to very light, but it was warm.

Race officers Max Randles and Jon Morris set a small triangular course to suit the conditions, upwind from the eastern to the harbour then out to Monkstone and back. The tide was running out strongly and the light wind only just sufficient to beat it.

The three Ospreys of Mike Stace and Deanna Morton, Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait and Paul Redford and Steve Garvey all started together on starboard, all tacking onto port to go up-tide early. Paul was forced to tack away from Mike, but this was disastrous and put him out of contention. Mike displayed excellent upwind speed in the light conditions to take the lead, but Ted and Matt plugged away downwind pulling back distance and keeping the pressure on.

After three slow laps, Mike and Deanna took the win, a few seconds ahead of Ted and Matt, with Paul and Steve in third. Danny Owen in his Vareo started the race, but retired to concentrate on spinnaker reaching and enjoying himself!

Saturday Training

Saturday Sailing will take place tomorrow (Saturday). Trainees should contact their sailing mentor.

Junior Sailing

Last Wednesday's turnout was a record 37 eager trainees, which delighted principal instructor Blake Shaw. Twenty-two dinghies were used at various stages of the evening, which is a feat in itself.

The popularity and success of these Wednesday sessions means that the club's resources, including manpower, are stretched. If any parent and/or member can lend a hand, please contact Blake Shaw on 842535 or commodore Terry Evans on 844256.

The evening was complete with the universally acclaimed Terry Evans BBQ.

Regatta/ Round Caldey Race

Ten dinghies and five Kite surfers turned up for Saturday's Regatta, with strong north-westerly winds, force 4 up to 7, promising exciting racing for all.

Sian May was the first casualty with gear failure, forcing the Mirror back to shore before the start.

Nine boats then started the first race and by the windward mark, Messrs. Knibb and Mackay in the newly-repaired boat were just ahead of Paul Redford and Steve Garvey in an Osprey.

In the blustery conditions, the Alistairs, in Lady in Red, decided to hoist the spinnaker and in doing so unfortunately broke its mast and were towed back to shore. Seeing this, the other boats decided to leave the spinnaker alone.

Mike Stace and Deanna Morton gained a small lead on the down wind legs, a lead they managed to hang onto until the finish to claim the The Cadwalader Galleon.

Several other boats retired, leaving only three boats to complete the second race. Paul and Steve, Ted Lewis and guest crew Richard John and the Blaze of Stefan Smart from Pembrokeshire Yacht Club.

The second race was won by Paul and Steve in Osprey 1345, who took the Regatta and the SH Hughes trophy.

Ted had a disagreement with a kite surfer before finishing second and Stefan third.

The final race was cancelled due to lack of standing competitors.

With the forecast for strong winds on Sunday, the Round Caldey race was cancelled. Better luck next year,

As above, many thanks in anticipation.

Jam Evening

Another superb evening of music generated by several very talented musicians. Many thanks to Nic Thomas and Terry Evans for co-ordinating the event. The next acoustic jam will be held on Monday, August 15, followed by an electric jam on Monday, August 22. It's the place to be - don't miss it.

Howard

Due to various functions at the club, Howard will not be catering this weekend.

Opening Hours

The club will be open every evening and Sunday lunchtime until further notice. Why not call in for 'lemonade' - there are not many 'watering holes' with a vista like ours.
