Come and Try Weekend

The annual come and try weekend was very successful, with 20 enthusiastic adult trainees turning up for, in some cases, their first venture into sailing.

On Friday, the trainees were given land-based instruction by principal instructor, Blake Shaw. On Saturday, they ventured onto the high seas in various craft, ranging from Toppers to Ospreys, including the divine GP14.

A lunch consisting of Terry Evans's legendary cawl and all the trimmings was much appreciated by the now ravenous trainees.

The afternoon saw some trainees trying different craft, including experiencing life aboard a cruiser.

Sunday' conditions were very similar, with the still enthusiastic trainees eager to get on the water. Lunch was again devoured with gusto, giving the trainees sufficient energy to 'survive' the final session.

During the weekend, two trainees, Abigail Dymmock and Rob Duggan, were awarded a level 1 certificate, no mean achievement given the blustery conditions.

In summing up, Blake thanked all who had participated and hoped that they would continue to enjoy sailing. All the participants agreed that the weekend had been a great success. The weekend would not have taken place were it not for the army of members who turned up to help. The club is grateful for their efforts.

Saturday Training

The Saturday session run by Mark Dashfield will begin, weather permitting, on May 28. Members intending to, participate should contact their sailing mentor.

Tuesday Sailing

Tuesday night's race was held in an ideal force 3/4 south-westerly with some stronger gusts. The four Ospreys enjoyed a competitive race, with plenty of position changes; at the start Ted Lewis and guest crew Chris Watkins took an early lead, powering away under spinnaker to the eastern mark. Encountering difficulties dropping the spinnaker slowed them down and Mike Stace and Deanna Morton took over the lead.

As the boats finished the next upwind leg, Ted and Chris had recovered, but approaching the mark on port, attempted to tack inside Mike, who was on starboard. Unfortunately, a poorly executed manoeuvre saw them capsize and Mike sailed away to take the win.

Nick Berridge and Richard John and Paul Redford with Steve Garvey in their two Ospreys both sailed past Ted and Chris while they recovered the capsize.

Positions were swapped several times between these boats over the following laps, but at the finish, Nick and Richard took second from Ted and Chris, with Paul and Steve in fourth; only 10 seconds separating these boats after 45 minutes on the water.

Also competing were Jon Morris and Max Randles in their RS600s and Ed Dashfield and Emily Kirby in their RS500. Max retired after several capsizes; Ed and Emily retired also, but Jon completed the course to take fifth spot on corrected time.

Osprey Training

This weekend sees representatives from the WYA at the club to train our Osprey sailors in advanced racing techniques.

After all this fine tuning, the rest of the fleet be aware!

Junior Sailing

As the previous week, last Wednesday's junior training session was very well attended, with all our training dinghies being used. Conditions again were marginal, but the trainees coped very well, with only a few capsizes. All were treated to the universally acclaimed BBQ once the boats were put away.

CYRC

On Saturday, May 7, a CYRC event took place at Fishguard which included several junior members from Tenby. Deryn May was second and Holly McDonald fourth in the Optimist fleet, while Harriet Sleight was third in the Topper fleet.

Conditions were lively with gusts of up to 20 knots on a flat sea in the harbour.

Many thanks to Fishguard for hosting the CYRC and the warm welcome. More CYRC events are coming up.

Jam Evening

Monday's acoustic jam was a most enjoyable affair. Even the visiting sailors entered into the spirit of the evening, with one member showing great skill on the base guitar. Many thanks to Terry Evans for co-ordinating the event. The next acoustic jam will be held on Monday, June 13, followed by an electric jam on Monday, June 20. It's the place to be!

Howard

Great news - Howard is catering on Fridays and Saturdays. Howard deserves our support, so come on down and enjoy great food in warm and convivial surroundings. Last week's steak pie was the "bee's knees'!
