Get Well Wishes

I'm sure that all members would like to join with me in wishing ex-commodore Rolly Squibbs well. We're looking forward to seeing Rolly back in the Osprey fleet and the darts team where his presence and prowess on the dart board is greatly needed.

Our good wishes also go to Tommy D'Ortez, who we hope to see back at the helm of the 49er very soon.

Junior

Training Day

Several juniors turned for last Sunday's training session held by the WYA. The day was very successful given very little wind - many thanks to all who helped on and off the water.

Powerboat Course

The first of many RYA level two powerboat courses was run over the weekend from the club by club powerboat instructor Paul Evenden, with additional boat handling advice and guidance provided by club senior sailing instructor Ed Dashfield.

Three candidates achieved their qualification and are now qualified to obtain an International Certificate of Competence which qualifies them to skipper a powerboat up to 10 metres long throughout the world. This certificate is a legal requirement in many countries and is like a 'driving licence for boats'.

The courses are offered at a very substantial discount to club members who may be available in future to put their new found skills to use by helping out afloat during club events.

The successful candidates were Paul Thomas, Marcus Hamer and Anthea Evenden.

Instructor Paul was particularly pleased at the delight expressed by the candidates when they realised that, after motoring out of sight of land in the hazy conditions on Saturday afternoon, they were able with their newly-found navigational skills to quickly and accurately find their way back to the harbour.

Interested members, please contact Paul Evenden on 0796 7000 884 or 01834 812598 for dates of the next course.

Sailing News for our 75th year

As mentioned in previous articles, the complete programme of racing fixtures and training is now on the website. Fixture cards are available at the club and copies have been sent out to members.

The first cruiser race is on Easter Monday, April 25, with 16 races planned for the season.

Junior training will start in April. To ensure a place, please come along to registration on Wednesday evenings, April 6 or 13. We have taken delivery of some new club dinghies which will be available for use by our more experienced juniors.

This being our 75th year, we are planning some celebration events - watch this space!

Sailing Begins

The long-awaited season starts this Sunday, April 3. There is a rumour that the divine GP14 may be taking part. Watch this space.

Jam Evening

The next acoustic jam is scheduled for Monday, April 11. Don't miss it.

Darts

We are at home this (Friday) evening to the Castle Inn B. Last week's practice session provided some hope when participants actually hit the designated area on the dart board. Will this unusual surge of confidence bear fruit? Let's wait and see.

Bangers, Faggots and Mash Evening

Many thanks to Commodore, Terry Evans, for putting on a bangers, faggots and mash feast, which included his universally acclaimed onion gravy. One member was heard to say "this is high class nosh" - praise indeed.

Wine-Tasting Evening

The commodore invites members and friends to a wine-tasting evening to be held at the club on Saturday, April 9. The evening is being sponsored by Molson-Coors, providing members and friends with an opportunity to taste various wines from around the world. Please gather at the club at 7.30 for an 8 pm start.

Fitting-Out Supper

The fitting-out steak evening scheduled for Saturday, April 16, has now been re-arranged for Saturday, April 23. Would members and friends please note.
