Sunday Sailing

A brisk north-westerly greeted the racers for the two Sunday races in the club summer series. Race office Nick Berridge, ably assisted by his secretarial staff, started with a triangular course starting at the southern mark, in to the harbour and then back out to the eastern.

The best fleet of the year so far of 11 boats (six Ospreys, two Mirrors, 49er, foiling RS600, RS600, RS Vareo) got away at a competitive start on the first upwind leg to the harbour. The 49er reached the windward mark first, followed by the Ospreys of Mike Stace and Deanna Morton and Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait. On the tightish reach, Ted and Matt promptly put up their spinnaker and sailed under Mike to first in the Osprey fleet; Mike and the following boats did likewise and then at the eastern mark the fleet gibed onto another spinnaker reach back to the start.

After an enjoyable three laps and on corrected time, it was Ted and Matt first, Mike and Deanna second and Rolly Squibbs and Marc Shepherd third.

The course was shortened for the second windward leeward race because of a significant drop in the wind. Again the start was well contested and the fleet split; most heading in towards Castle Hill and some going right towards Monkstone.

At the windward mark, the fleet arrived more or less together, those coming in from out to sea were on starboard tack and had right of way. The 49er came in like a rocket, causing mayhem among the port tack approachers. Ted and Matt were hot on its heels and the two rounded first and second, setting spinnakers for the return downwind.

The following fleet were very closely bunched and tussled for position for the rest of the race. Ted and Matt were far enough ahead to sail away from the dogfight behind.

After three laps it was Ted and Matt in first; Rolly and Marc having won a gibing duel with Mike in second and Mike and Deanna having survived a boarding attempt by the Alistairs in third.

Adult Training

The third Saturday adult training continues tomorrow (Saturday), commencing at 3 pm. It is intended to run these Saturday sessions throughout the sailing season. As per last season, trainees should contact their trainer prior to the Saturday session. New trainees should contact Mark Dashfield on 844918 or Terry Evans on 844256.

Junior Sailing

The usual band of enthusiastic trainees turned up for the scheduled training session, but the conditions were such that hardly any movement occurred on the water due to lack of wind.

Many thanks to principal instructor, Blake Shaw, and all who help for making these sessions so successful.

If any member can help, please contact Blake Shaw on 842535 or Terry Evans on 844256. Thanks in anticipation.

Terry Evans's universally acclaimed BBQs took place, with the hordes of salivating sailors tasting some superb food. These BBQs will continue throughout the summer, so please support Terry and the club.

Cruiser Racing

The fifth cruiser race of the season took place on Saturday, May 29. With a force 5 to 6 west-south-westerly wind, race officer, Blake Shaw, set a demanding course of North Highcliff, Giltar, North Highcliffe, Giltar and home.

Gusts were variable and sometimes very strong which meant some reefing of the sails. The sailing was very exhilarating, with Astra and Tejeda crossing the line with only seconds between them.

After handicap adjustments, the results were as follows: yacht Astra helmed by Roy Lawrence; yacht Slipstream helmed by Blake Shaw; yacht Tejeda helmed by John Griffiths; yacht Beagle helmed by Rolly Squibbs.

All agreed that the sailing had been superb. The next cruiser race is this Monday, June 14, commencing at 7 pm.

Round Britain Charity Trip

Fran Gifford called into Tenby on Saturday in her Wayfarer. She is sailing round Britain raising money for the RNLI and Shining Light Children's Trust.

Super Saturday Series

Seven boats took to the water for the first of the Super Saturday series. Uzi Jane sailed by guest helm Dan Jackson was joined by Nan Dowell in a Redwing, Alistair Knibb in an Osprey, Max Randles, Danny Owen and vice-commodore Mark Brace with the first outing this year of the Enterprise.

Race officer Paul Redford set a triangular course from the harbour mark around the club race marks .

Results after two laps: 1. Uzi Jane (Dan Jackson); 2. Pintail (Nan Dowell); 3. (Alistair Knibb).

After racing, a sumptuous barbecue by the legendary chef and commodore, Terry Evans, was enjoyed by all.

Next event in this series is Saturday, July 3, at 6 pm.

Passage Race

Tomorrow (Saturday) sees the running of the annual Hobbs Point to Tenby Passage Race. Last year, 37 yachts ended up mooring in the North Bay - a magnificent sight. We are anticipating similar numbers this year.

The lure of Terry Evans's universally acclaimed BBQ will surely help the helms to make that crucial decision. Shall we sail or not?

Jam Evening

The next session will be next Monday, June 14. Don't miss it. It's the place to be!

At last the club diaries have arrived. They will be available at the club. For those not in the know, the club diary runs from April to March in keeping with the sailing season.
