There was no club racing last Sunday, so the two Ospreys of Mike Stace and Deanna Morton and Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait, the RS500 of Edward Dashfield and Emily Kirby and the RS600 of Dan Jackson headed to Neyland to take part in the Pembrokeshire regatta.
The wind blew strongly from the west at about force five, but with some tasty gusts to keep the competitors on their toes. Three races were sailed, with a break for lunch when the Irish ferry berthed at the port of Pembroke opposite.
The dinghy fleet was divided into two divisions, all the Tenby boats being in division one, with the slower boats in division two. Division one was dominated by a sterling performance from the Tenby fleet in testing conditions and unfamiliar territory.
Edward and Emily in the RS 500 showed extraordinary downwind speed to secure first place overall, but not without several mishaps. Their success would not have been achieved without the input of their swimming teachers! Mike and Deanna sailed a consistent series to take second. Ted and Mat sailed an inconsistent series, including gear failure and sailing the wrong course, but had it not been for these mishaps would surely have won the event! Dan Jackson suffered an unfortunate incident with a GP 14, resulting in a sizeable hole in the hull of his racing machine.
An enjoyable day was had by all competitors, and even the sun emerged to take part.
Junior Training
Yet again, over 40 youngsters turned up for the usual junior training session, which resulted in 20 club boats on the water, again a magnificent sight. Conditions were in contrast to the previous couple of sessions, with plenty of wind for all the trainees to experience exciting sailing.
After the training session, the trainees and racers were treated to the legendary Terry Evans BBQ. Sessions are planned for every Wednesday at 5.15 pm, weather
permitting.
