Welsh Schools Championships

The Welsh Schools and Clubs Championships were held at Tenby last weekend. A record 137 entries descended onto Tenby harbour which proved a logistic challenge for the beach-masters and race committee. Patience was the order of the day and eventually all boats, equipment etc were safely secured.

Racing started promptly at 11.30 on Saturday with the main fleets, which included a general handicap section, a Topper section and an Optimist section, successfully completing four races back to back.

The Regatta (training) fleet were given expert tuition before the lunch break, with two races being completed after in the afternoon.

All competitors were off the water by 4.40 pm and were treated to the universally acclaimed Terry Evans BBQ.

Conditions on Sunday were very similar to Saturday's, which meant the fleets had plenty of wind for some exciting sailing. Racing started at 10.30, with the main fleets completing two races back to back and the regatta fleet completing four short races back to back.

When all the competitors and organisers were safely ashore, the prize-giving took place on the harbour. Commodore, Mark Dashfield, thanked the representatives of Welsh Sailing for choosing Tenby and praised all the competitors for the way they had conducted themselves throughout the championships.

Mark then introduced the chairman of Welsh Sailing, Chris Basten, who thanked the members of Tenby for their hospitality and praised everyone who had been involved in making the event such a successful one.

The local prize-winners were as follows:

General handicap fleet: 3rd - Jonathan Morris in a Laser; 15th - Mathew May and Sam Hunter-Baxter in a Feva. No mean achievement considering that many of the general handicap fleet were Welsh squad members.

Regatta fleet: joint first - Alex Brace in a RS Tera; joint second - James May in a RS Tera; joint third - Harriet Sleight in a RS Tera; joint fourth - Carwyn Owen in a RS Tera; joint fifth - Dylan Lewis in a RS Tera; joint sixth - Thomas Stewart-Walvin in a RS Tera; joint seventh - Huw Owen in a RS Tera; joint eighth - Elise Cox in a RS Tera; joint eighth - Deryn May in an Optimist; joint ninth - Jack Deer-Jones an Optimist; 10th - Lizzie Diamond in a Topper.

First Tenby competitor for the overall championships was Jonathan Morris. Well done!

The representatives of the Welsh Sailing again thanked Tenby for as superb effort and wished all a safe journey home.

From a club point of view, the event had been a very successful one. This could not have happened without the help of a great number of people. In particular, Blake Shaw as race officer for the main fleets, Alastair Mackay as race officer for the regatta fleet and Mark Brace for co-ordinating the safety fleet which consisted of 22 safety boats. Many thanks to all other willing volunteers who contributed to the success of the weekend. Also many thanks to the patience and understanding shown by the harbour community.

Junior Training

Yet again, over 40 youngsters turned up for the usual junior training session which resulted in 20 club boats on the water, again a magnificent sight. Again, with little or no wind, the trainees were instructed on how to sail in very light conditions.

After a 'drifting' training session, the trainees and racers were treated to the legendary Terry Evans BBQ.

Sessions are planned for every Wednesday at 5.15 pm, weather permitting.

Cruise in Company

Weather permitting, the annual cruise in company will take place tomorrow (Saturday). Would participants gather at 10 am. I believe a possible destination will be Marros Bay. The final destination will be decided upon consideration of the conditions tomorrow morning.
