Open Meeting
A glorious weekend of sailing was enjoyed by the competitors at the club dinghy Open Meeting run on Saturday and Sunday.
Both days brought bright sunshine, Saturday with a light westerly that built during the day to a respectable force 3/4 and Sunday a robust force four north-westerly full of shifts and holes.
Last year, competitors in the Tenby Open contended with the strong easterly winds that resulted in a massive swell and a number of broken spars and limbs. Fortunately this year the brisk northerlies resulted in flatter water and no insurance claims or hospital visits!
The local club Ospreys, Phantom and RS500 were joined by visiting Ospreys, a visiting RS500 and Peter Bower in his Phantom from Saundersfoot. Although the attendance was disappointingly low, the quality could not be faulted, one of the Ospreys being the national champion and the RS500 recently victorious at an international event in Lake Garda Italy.
Six races were run over the two days and the event was won by Tim Wilkins, the visiting RS500 helmsmen with his crew Heather Martin, hailing from Sully Sailing Club.
Second was the Osprey national champion Martin Cooney and Peter Frith from Poole Sailing Club, third Edward Dashfield and Emily Kirby in their RS500, followed by the Tenby Osprey fleet.
Of the Ospreys, Rolly Squibbs and Marc Shepherd just pipped Mike Stace and Deanna Morton and Alistair Knibb and Alastair Mackay, sailing increasingly fast in their renovated old boat, just pipped Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait, who were the only competitors to take a swim in the north bay at this seasonably cold time of year!
All the sailors thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and convey their thanks to the organisers, safety boat crew and hard workers in the clubhouse.
