Sunday sailing

The remnants of Saturday's south easterly gale was still blowing on Sunday morning, although much less vigorously. The sea was choppy with whitecaps visible from the shore and the sailors were looking forward to a boisterous outing. Unfortunately, it was not to be. The wind was declining all the time and the congested sea state sometimes made progress difficult.

Race officer Mike Stace set a windward leeward course. The four Ospreys of Rowland Squibbs and Marc Shepherd, Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait, Paul Evenden and Anthea Patterson and Alistair Knibb and Alastair Mackay were joined on the start line by the RS500 of Edward Dashfield and Emily Kirby, the Phantom of Paul Redford and the 29er of Tommy D'Ortez and Connor Keohane.

Most of the fleet misjudged the strength of the tide and were late to the start line, but the Alistairs made a good start closely followed by Rowland and Marc. Ted and Matt were passed by Paul and Anthea on the first of windward leg but reclaimed that position on the second beat. Rowland and Marc overtook the Alistairs to take first place on the water with the RS500 and Phantom never far away.

The winds declined throughout the race to the advantage of the Phantom which finished one lap earlier than the faster boats. On corrected time the results were first Edward Dashfield and Emily Kirby, second Rowland Squibbs and Marc Shepherd, third Paul Redford in his Phantom.
