Sail training
Alas, no sailing last Wednesday, which was again adversely affected by the inclement weather. However, those who turned up were treated to the ever popular Terry Evans BBQ.
Sunday sailing
A light south-easterly breez,e which increased during the race, made for an enjoyable sail in the sunshine on Sunday morning. Race officer Paul Redford set a windward leeward course, but the erratic wind led to several shifts of the windward mark.
At the start, the boats were tightly bunched. The Osprey of Rolly Squibbs and Marc Shepherd got away a couple of feet in front of the rest and maintained their lead in the Osprey fleet to the end. Dan Jackson in his RS600 found conditions to his liking and took the win on handicap. Nick Berridge sailing his Phantom came fourth on corrected time, splitting the Osprey fleet, where Mike Stace and Deanna Morton were third and Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait fifth. Paul Evenden and Anthea Paterson were sixth, ahead of Tommy D'Ortez and Conor Keohane in their 29er.
It was a refreshing change to sail in pleasant and breezy conditions. The result keeps open the battle for the summer championship where Nick Berridge looks reasonably comfortable with two races to go, from Dan Jackson who is enjoying a purple patch, and winning consistently.
Cruiser racing
Saturday's cruiser race was a close affair. Race officer, Blake Shaw, set a course which rounded Eel Point and DZ2 to port. The second leg was a long spinnaker run, followed by a beat against the tide to the finishing line. After handicaps were taken into account, Mike Stace in yacht Sibling was first, followed by John Griffiths in yacht Tejeda and Blake Shaw in yacht Slipstream.
Sadly, this was the last cruiser race of the season and things couldn't be closer as far as the overall result is concerned. It seems that Mike and John have exactly the same number of points, subject to confirmation - watch this space for the eventual outcome.
