Cruiser Racing

Saturday's cruiser race attracted five yachts eager to do battle. Race officer, Blake Shaw, set the course of green club buoy, North High-Cliff and a beat to the harbour markers. After a most civilised start, the yachts soon decided to fly their spinnakers. Most of the manoeuvres went fairly smoothly but, in a shifty wind and a strong tide, there were moments of 'spinnaker stress'. The final finishing positions, taking handicaps into account, were as follows: 1. Tejeda, helmed by John Griffiths; 2. Astra, helmed by Roy Lawrence; 3. Slipstream, helmed by Blake Shaw; 4. Aries, helmed by Steve Lewis; 5. Mosquito, helmed by Geoff Martin

Dinghy Sailing   Osprey National Championships: Two Tenby boats travelled to Poole Yacht Club last weekend for the Osprey National Championship. After four hard days sailing, with near gale conditions at times, both boats fared extremely well, with the team of Rolly Squibbs and Marc Shepherd finishing 27th and Mike Stace and Deanna Morton 30th overall. Both crews enjoyed great racing and hospitality by the host club which included beer-laden trolley dollies after the windy races! Sunday's racing at Tenby: Race officer Alistair Mackay set a port triangular course in a shifty northerly wind, when a depleted fleet of five boats lined up for the start in a strong force four.  A bold attempt by the Laser 2000 to keep the RS600 out at the start backfired when the strong tide caught hold and left an open start line at the committee boat end for the faster RS600 to sail free. Making good use of the shifts, the RS600 was soon in a commanding lead, taking the left side of the course into shallower water, less tide and some handsome wind shifts. The Laser 2000 continued to battle his way around the course, splitting the Phantom duo and forcing Nick Berridge to hit the windward mark! The resulting penalty turns left him trailing at the back of the fleet.  Good speed downwind by the 29er opened up a nice gap in front of third place, but some over- zealous kite manoeuvres kept them in check of Paul Redford, the leading Phantom.  As the race progressed, the Laser 2000 kept good speed, but the 29er pulled clear in some favourable gusts on a near perfect broad reach. At the finish, the RS600 had lapped all but the 29er, who just escaped the humiliation and still managed a first podium finish of the season - one to watch for the future. Results: 1. RS600 Dan Jackson; 2. 29er Tommy D'Ortez and Connor Keohane; 3. Laser 2000 Steve Stubbs and Thomas Stubbs; 4. Phantom Paul Redford; 5. Phantom Nick Berridge. Thanks to Dan Jackson for the above report on dingy racing. Wednesday

Wednesday's conditions were perfect for training. A large number of enthusiastic juniors descended on the harbour and were put through their paces by principal instructor Blake Shaw. Afterwards, the trainees were treated to the universally acclaimed Terry Evans BBQ.
