Dinghy Sailing

On Saturday, the club hosted the annual contest with Saundersfoot Sailing Club. Racing was well supported by both clubs. For Tenby, five Ospreys, two Phantoms, a RS600 and a 29er took to the water. For Saundersfoot, a 505, a Phantom, numerous Solos, Lasers and Supernovas came to the start, making a fleet of about 20 boats. Mark Dashfield and Bill Dowell in rescue boats managed the event with numerous helpers from both clubs. Winds were generally about force four from the north-west, producing conditions that were shifty and patchy. A large triangular course was set, giving a good beat up wind to start, followed by two spinnaker reaches back to the leeward mark. Three good races were enjoyed by all competitors, although some found the conditions rather demanding and retired after two races. There were various incidents at the start line, at mark roundings, up wind on port/starboard and downwind in the gusts with spinnakers. A most enjoyable afternoon's sailing was had by all competitors, followed by a barbecue at the Tenby club.

The scoring of the racing was done on an average lap basis under the Portsmouth yardstick. The strong winds favoured the faster boats, most of which came from the Tenby club.

The event was won by Dan Jackson in his RS600, followed by the 505 from Saundersfoot and then the Tenby Phantoms and Ospreys. On balance, Tenby enjoyed a resounding win, which Saundersfoot will no doubt be keen to challenge on the next occasion.

On Sunday, the usual club race took place in warm conditions with sunshine! A south westerly force two to three provided comfortable sailing for a fleet rather depleted by the previous day's exertions. Emily Kirby acted as race officer and set a long broad reach out to the eastern mark, followed by an upwind leg to the southern mark and a tight reach back in.

After an even start, the Ospreys of Paul Evenden and Anthea Paterson and Ted Lewis/Matt Goldwait were vying for the front spot, with the Phantom of Nick Berridge in hot pursuit.

After an enjoyable three-lap race, the lean and light Paul and Anthea left the heavyweight Ted and Matt in their wake, but were not far enough in front of the Phantom to take the win.

After applying handicaps, it was Nick Berridge first, Paul and Anthea second, Ted and Matt third and the Commodore and Mrs. Commodore fourth. WEDNESDAY

Wednesday's conditions were such that training did not take place. However, the trainees were treated to the usual mouth-watering BBQ. On a grovelling note, I failed to mention Jane Stuart-Walvin's major contribution to the Wednesday BBQs. Will I ever be forgiven?
