Dinghy Sailing

Wednesday: Three Ospreys a 29er and an RS500 came to the start for Wednesday night's race. A light and shifty north-westerly blowing off the cliffs provided interesting conditions. Four new racing marks were made and laid by Mike Stace, a fine effort by him. At the start, it was Edward Dashfield and Emily Kirby in the RS500, closely followed by Mike Stace and Deanna Morton in their Osprey, Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait in their Osprey, with the 29er of Christian and Connor and the Osprey of Bill Dowell and Tom D'Ortez bringing up the rear. On the downwind spinnaker reaches, positions were maintained on the first lap, although Bill and Tom made up some ground as the fleet bunched. Edward and Emily sailed away from the pursuing Ospreys (which in theory are faster boats) and enjoyed clear air at the front untroubled by any opposition. Mike and Deanna sailed the leading Osprey, with Ted and Matt in close attendance and Bill and Tom a few yards further back. On the second beat, Ted and Matt picked the shifts and reached the windward mark as first Osprey, but behind the RS500. On the subsequent downwind legs, Mike and Deanna and Bill and Tom passed Ted and Matt and at the finish it was the RS500 first, Mike and Deanna second, Bill and Tom third, Ted and Matt fourth and Christian and Connor bringing up the rear. Sunday: A glorious Sunday morning greeted the competitors for this week's club race. Two Phantoms, five Ospreys and a 29er took to the water. Bright sunshine and a building north- westerly wind made for a very pleasant race. An even start upwind toward Monkstone saw all competitors away in close formation, some going to the unfamiliar new racing mark of Pendine. All soon realised the mistake and rounded the correct mark. At the first windward mark, it was Mike Stace and Deanna Morton leading, followed by Alistair Mackay and Alistair Knibb and Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait. On the broad spinnaker reach towards Caldey, the Alistairs were passed by Ted and Matt, the two phantoms of Nick Berridge and Paul Redford and the Ospreys of Rolly Squibbs and Marc Shepherd and Paul Evenden and Anthea Paterson all closed up. It was then a tight spinnaker reach back to the start mark during which positions were maintained. Three laps of a large course were enjoyed by all. At the end, and on corrected time, the phantoms of Nick Berridge and Paul Redford were first and second, followed by the Ospreys of Mike and Deanna and Ted and Mat, then Paul and Anthea and Rolly and Marc.

Cruiser Racing

There were ideal weather conditions for both the Saturday and Sunday races. On Saturday, a fleet of six yachts set off on a long course around Caldey and the Old Castle Head Buoy off Manorbier.  It was a four-mile beat to windward all the way to the buoy and a long spinnaker run back against the tide. However, the wind kept up to around force four and all boats finished in good time and made their moorings before the tide went out. Winner of the trophy was Rolly Squibbs in Beagle, with Mike Stace in Sibling second and Blake Shaw in Slipstream third. On Sunday, the wind had changed to NW and gusting force five. A course was set around DZ2, Woolhouse and North High Cliff buoys. The reach to DZ2 was a shade tight for spinnaker use as John Griffiths in Tejeda found. Blake Shaw in Slipstream kept on his tail and passed Tejeda on the upwind leg from North High Cliff to take line honours. Final positions were. 1. Slipstream; 2. Tejeda; 3. Steve Lewis in Aries; 4. Roy and Chris Lawrence in Astra, with Geoff Martin (and Geoff Jun) in their new boat Maximus, 5th.   Although it was Geoff's first weekend of racing, he was always in contention and we hope we will see Maximus in the rest of the season's races.

Saturday Junior Race Training

Several juniors are benefiting from Mark Dashfield's training session on Saturdays. They start at 1 pm - participating juniors and members please note. Thanks to Tommy D'Ortez for running last Saturday's session. Tomorrow Mark will be back in charge.

Regatta

The annual Tenby Regatta takes place this weekend. Tomorrow's session will consist of two races back to back followed by a pursuit race scheduled after the afternoon break. On Sunday, the fleet will participate in the Round Caldey Race. If any member is able to help in any way, please contact Mark Dashfield on 844918.

Welsh Schools and Clubs Championships

The club will host this prestigious event on the weekend of June 28/29. Well over 100 dinghies are expected, sailed by juniors from all corners of Wales and beyond. Such a large entry will mean that Tenby harbour will be full of various types of dinghy, thereby making parking very difficult. It is anticipated that the car park area will be clear by Sunday evening. As above, if any member or friend is able to help in any way, please contact Mark Dashfield on 844918 or Blake Shaw on 842535. Thanks in anticipation.

Jam evening

Monday's jam session was thoroughly enjoyed by an appreciative audience revelling in superb music. There were some memorable renditions of Rolling Stones' classics and Charlie's 'bouncing' style created quite a stir. Many thanks to Will Scott and Terry Evans for co-ordinating the event. The next jam session is scheduled for Monday, July 14, at the usual time. Come down and listen to great music superbly delivered by musicians from far and wide. It's the place to be!
