Sunday dawned grey and dreary and very, very still. Undeterred, the usual contestants turned up for the fourth race of the summer series. The boats put to sea, but the absence of wind made for very slow progress towards the start line. Happily the wind then filled in about force 3 from the west. Bill Dowell, race officer, set a port course with a reaching start and at the gun the fleet were off under spinnakers out towards Caldey. At the jibe mark, all the boats were in close contention, but in particular the RS 500 of Edward Dashfield and Emily Kirby, and the club RS Vision helmed by Dan Jackson and Max Randles were well to the fore since they are slower than the Ospreys on handicap. In the Osprey fleet a dingdong battle ensued; Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait were first away, but were rapidly passed by the Ospreys of Rolly Squibbs and Marc Shepherd, Paul Evenden and Anthea Paterson and Mike Stace and Deanna Morton. Rolly and Marc sailed away into a commanding lead. Good up wind speed by Ted and Matt saw them claw their way back into second position in the Osprey fleet, from which Mike and Deanna retired to go seal spotting off Caldey. The two RS boats revelled in the conditions, showing good speed both up wind and down. On corrected time the race was won by Edward and Emily in the RS 500, followed by Dan and Max in the RS Vision, Rolly and Marc in their Osprey and Ted and Matt in their Osprey
Junior Race Training
On Saturday, a select number of TSC juniors enjoyed the first race training session on the water in a pleasant, but testing southerly f2-4. Three Teras, two Fevas and a 29er, under the watchful instruction of Mark Dashfield, ably assisted by Betty Hibbits, sailed around the trapezoid course to be used in the forthcoming Welsh Schools Championship to be held in Tenby in late June 2008. The juniors enjoyed close racing, with the line honours going to Mathew May in his new Tera in the first race and Georgia Williams and Rosie Brace in their brand new RS Feva in the second. Daniel Morgan and Alex Brace enjoyed close racing in the mid fleet in their Teras. The more experienced sailors were given some expert boat handling guidance by Ed Dashfield, assisted by Joe Hinchliffe. Thanks to the hard working onshore crew of Roy Lawrence and Mark Brace. The next session will be in two weeks time, on Saturday, May 10, at the usual time of 1 pm. Open Dinghy/Osprey Weekend
This weekend sees the open dinghy and Osprey regatta when several Ospreys and other dinghy classes converge on Tenby. Weather permitting, this should be a well attended event when sailors from far and wide enjoy the sailing waters of Tenby. If anyone is able to help, please contact commodore Mark Dashfield on 844918.
Adult Come and Try Weekend
The annual adult 'come and try' weekend is scheduled for the weekend of May 23/24/25. Any adult who wants to experience the thrill of sailing should contact Mark Dashfield on 844918 or Blake Shaw on 842535.
RNLI Lifejacket Demonstration
Max Jones from the RNLI's Sea Safety team will be presenting a lifejacket demonstration at the club at 7 pm on Friday, May 16 - a light-hearted presentation with a serious message which covers the use of lifejackets, how they should be fitted and how they should be checked and maintained. This demonstration is relevant to ALL boat users, power as well as sail. Guests are welcome, so if you have boating friends who are not club members, please ask them to come along. Max will be accompanied by Tenby station's lifeboat sea safety officer, Andrew Lowe, and both will be available after the demo to answer questions on lifejackets and other sea safety equipment. Terry's delicious barbeque will be available from 8.30 pm onwards. You will also have the opportunity to book a free RNLI sea check for your boat - an adviser can visit your boat to provide friendly, informal and confidential advice about the safety equipment on board. A sea check is available for all leisure craft under 45ft - power, sail and PWCs. If you are unable to make the evening, but would still like to book a sea check, please call Andrew Lowe on 07770 996574 or 01834 842672 or e- mail: [email protected]">[email protected]
