First of all an apology to the winners of the Commander Lock trophy for the round Caldey race. The report should have read Max Jones and Ceri Shepherd in an Enterprise. Several interested parties pointed out the error for which I accept full responsibility. Also, I was most remiss in not thanking Blake Shaw for preparing the sailing instructions - this is an erroneous task which is very time consuming. I didn't have a good one last week did I?
Lots of racing to report starting with last Wednesday's keenly contested tussle. Race officer, Blake Shaw, set a course in keeping with the conditions.
The final 1-2-3-4 was: 1. Chris Mackay in a RS600; 2. Steve Stubbs in a RS700; 3. Mike Stace and Deanna Morton in a Redwing; 4. Govan Berridge in a Laser Radial.
As well as the sailing on Wednesday evening, the club was honoured by the presence of a BBC film crew headed by Jamie Owen. BBC Wales are making a series on Welsh islands and their surroundings.
Wednesday was Caldey's turn - after filming around the island, the film crew anchored off Tenby and filmed the sailors in action. The ensemble then came ashore and recorded activities at the club which included a sumptuous barbecue prepared by Terry Evans, a conversation between Alan Thomas and a visiting coxswain and various sailing banter by club members.
The programme will go on air sometime in September. Many thanks to Jane Brace, Nan D'Ortez, Althea Shaw and Royce Thomas for their invaluable assistance.
Back to sailing. Saturday saw another large turnout, with race officer Rolly Squibbs setting a course which tested the competitors. The course obviously suited the Redwings who took the first three positions.
The final places were: 1. Mike Stace and Deanna Morton in a Redwing; 2. Bill Dowell and Nan O'Ortez in a Redwing; 3. Helen Williams and Dave Bowen in a Redwing.
Sunday saw the usual eager fleet doing battle. Race officer, Ed Dashfield, set the usual demanding course which again seemed to suit the Redwings.
The final 1-2-3 was: 1. Mike Stace and Deanna Morgan in a Redwing; 2. Rolly Squibbs and Tim Brace in a Redwing; 3. Kevin and Christine from Worcester in a Javelin.
Over the weekend, the Welsh School Championships took place at Dale. Race officers Blake Shaw and Mark Dashfield were kept very busy in administration classes such as Toppers and Optimists.
The weekend was very successful, with our own Angelo Fecci and Joe Lewis performing extremely well in a very competitive field. Well done boys.
Those who watch S4C may have seen the event featured on Wednesday. It was also very pleasing to observe that Pembrokeshire had the largest contingent which is a testimony to the sail training taking place at the clubs of Pembrokeshire.
As well as dinghy sailing at Dale, other members of the club, namely Billy Stubbs, Tony Spiller and Stan Hutchings, were carrying the flags in the Haven. They sailed yacht Amphora to Milford marina on Friday evening in readiness for Martha's Cup regatta run by the Pembrokeshire Cruiser Racing Club based at Milford marina.
The racing took place over two days, Saturday and Sunday, with a superb social gathering on Saturday evening. Both days provided excellent sailing, with Amphora gaining second place on Sunday and a third overall in its class This is a significant achievement considering that most of the fleet normally sail the Haven and therefore should know every 'nook and cranny', so to speak. Well done gentlemen!
Another of our dinghy sailors, Gareth Morgan, fared very well at the Three Rivers race held by Ferryside Sailing Club. Leading for almost the entire race, a navigation mix-up cost him and several visiting boats dearly. However, well done Gareth!
SOCIAL SCENE
Now to the social scene.

Just think of it - good food and good music in the 'best watering hole in town'. What more does one need on a Friday evening?
Watch this space for forthcoming events!
