Yet again weather conditions prevented sailing, much to the disappointment of the usual band of eager sailors. Hopefully, there will be sailing as normal this Sunday. Nil desperandum - some more maritime humour perhaps?

Listed below are some 'definitions' of sailing terms.

Sailing - the art of getting wet and becoming ill, while going nowhere slowly at great expense.

Bulkhead - discomfort suffered by sailors who drink too much!

Boom - called boom for the sound that's made when it hits crews in the head on its way across the boat. For slow crew, it's called 'boom, boom.'

Crew - heavy, stationary objects used on ship to hold down charts, anchor cushions in place and dampen sudden movements of the boom.

Current - tidal flow that carries a boat away from its desired destination or towards a hazard.

Gybe - a common way to get unruly guests off your boat.

More next week.

ROYAL THAMES

1840 TROPHY

As mentioned last week, two years ago Tenby won the prestigious trophy for excellence in race management. I am delighted to report that the club has gained second place in the 2001 series, overcoming a very strong field nationally.

Terry Evans, Blake Shaw, commodore Rolly Squibbs and madame commodore Jane Brace attended the presentation held at Alexander Palace. The club was highly praised by the vice commodore of the Royal Thames Yacht Club who presented the said members with a certificate, a silver plate and a superb book on the history of the Royal Thomas Yacht Club in front of a large audience of club commodores.

The club can be proud of its achievement - Saturday's presentation certainly put Tenby on the national and international map!

The social side continues to flourish. Would members and friends please note the following dates.
