Conditions on Saturday were such that the participants in the cruiser race had to call on all their skills. With the wind gusting to at least force six, it was touch and go whether some reefing was necessary. The course was Tenby, Eel Point, North Highcliffe, Monkstone, Tenby.

The first leg was a run when only Tejeda flew a spinnaker. Tejeda was ahead of Slipstream by Eel Point, but was overtaken on the beat to Monkstone, Slipstream's greater bulk being more suited to the conditions.

It was a close race to the end, with the 1-2-3 being: 1. Slipstream helmed by Blake Shaw; 2. Tejeda helmed by John Griffiths; 3. Aries helmed by Steve Lewis.

Anthony Bolwell's apparent attempt at making his mooring under sail entertained onlookers in the harbour. A strong gust of wind provided a sudden acceleration, making any small manoeuvres very difficult. Anthony eventually berthed in one piece.

Sunday's racing took place in very contrasting conditions. An enthusiastic fleet of sailors, many returning after a very enjoyable week at Saundersfoot, made the start in very light winds.

Around the first mark, the RSs and Redwings were vying for the lead ahead of the divine GP14 and an Enterprise.

On the second leg, the wind died dramatically for the leading boats, but increased in strength in the vicinity of the GP14 and Enterprise. Consequently, the gap between the boats diminished rapidly. The GP14, fresh from last week's success, smelt blood again.

This optimism was short-lived when the wind picked up, enabling the leading boats to maintain their position. Indeed, the wind varied greatly during the second lap which kept the helms alert.

On the last leg, Mike Stace found a gust which shot him past Rolly Squibbs to cross the line a few seconds ahead.

The final positions were: 1. Mike Stace and Deanna Morton in a Redwing; 2. Rolly Squibbs and Alistair Mackay in a Redwing; 2. Ed Dashfield and Daniel Jackson in a RS400; 4. Steve Stubbs in a RS700; 5. Terry Evans and Jane Brace in the divine GP14.

Many thanks to Tim Brace and Graham Morris for taking on board the role of race officers.
