Tenby Rotary president Rhodri Evans was delighted to welcome Greenhill Year 13 students Tegan Foley and Chloe Thomas to the weekly meeting at the Royal Lion Hotel in order to give an account of their experiences on the Rotary Youth Leadership Award programme.

Each year around 100 young people take part in a challenging week in the Brecon Beacons sponsored by Rotary Clubs in South Wales.  The course focuses on leadership skills, using outdoor activities as the base, such as rock climbing, caving, canoeing and gorge walking. The objective is to help students develop team-working skills, explore and practise leadership and develop greater personal confidence. There are only two essential qualifications - students must be 16 or 17 at the time of their course and must be able to swim.

Both Tegan and Chloe led a team of British and international students. Having been briefed themselves, they had to communicate the technical skills, risks and risk management to their team.   Although instructors were there as back up, the students were in overall charge. Chloe and Tegan were very enthusiastic about their experiences, having made new friends and pushed their personal boundaries.

It is hoped that this will be of benefit to both students in their university life or future work. President Rhodri and fellow Rotarians thoroughly enjoyed their most informative and confident presentation.
