The RNLI crew from Tenby really are going the extra mile for charity by taking part in this weekend's Tenby 10K - some closer to home than others. Hawaii and Miami are just two of the destinations where keen runners have plotted a course, as they participate in the event thousands of miles away from home.

RNLI mechanic Steve Lowe, his daughter's boyfriend Elliott Randall and family friend Jazz Langdon will swap sunbathing and cocktails for pounding the pavements in the Hawaii heat.

Steve said: "We were disappointed when we found the Tenby 10K clashed with our holiday, but figured our support for the event didn't have to falter just because we are away from home. We have therefore set about plotting a 10K course during our break, which we will run the same day as our friends back at home."

Steve is not the only RNLI runner who will be taking part in the race thousands of miles from home.

RNLI volunteer Will Thomas, who is a crew member at Tenby when his work on a research vessel allows, has packed an RNLI running vest during his most recent trip to Miami. He will also be running the 10K race on the same day as his friends back home.

RNLI crew members from Tenby who are also taking part in the event, which follows a scenic course in and around the resort will also be joined by a very special guest.

Julie Brooks, who was dramatically rescued by Tenby RNLI last November, is returning to the station on Sunday to repay her rescuers. Julie from Torfaen will also be running to race to thank the RNLI crew who saved her and her three children when she became stranded on a cliff at Lydstep.

The children managed to climb to safety, but Julie was stranded on the rocks and was brought to safety by the RNLI volunteers who she will be reunited with on Sunday.

Hannah Carling, RNLI fundraising events co-ordinator said: "We are thrilled that Julie is taking part, it is a really nice gesture that she has decided to run alongside the volunteers who brought her to safety. It is also very unusual to hear of people actually taking the race to exotic locations like Hawaii, but inspiring that the RNLI is at the forefront of people's minds even when they're on holiday.

"Every penny we can raise to support our volunteer crews is much appreciated."
